More skin cancer or more skin cancer awareness?
Thu, 06-05-2014 - 10:02am

It seems like I know more people with skin cancer than ever before in my life. I don't remember ever hearing about it when I was younger. Is skin cancer increasing or is it that there is more awareness and it is being diagnosed more? I can't decided which it is.

Hi Alvie,

I personally think it may be due to better awareness. People now understand what sun can do to skin and are become better aware of and prepared to prevent skin cancer.

I think it may be both.

Tanning beds are "relatively" new, so-to-speak, and as time goes by, I do think more people are getting skin cancer from the tanning beds.  That is what my Dr. told me.  Can't necessarily "prove" it.

My melanoma was diagnosed after 4 summers of tanning in the beds.  Coincidence??  Hard to say for sure, but apparently girls are coming in younger and younger and having spots that are not in the normal "lay out in the backyard" areas.

I also think because of the awarness of skin cancer, more people are getting checked.  Remember also that you can have Squamas or Basil and not even know it, unless you get checked.  Mine basal was an itchy spot you could even see.  Melanoma was more obvious.

Just my thoughts and experience.
