Have you been following the news about the 2002 abduction of Elizabeth Smart?

I've seen a little in the news and in the newspaper recently about the trial. This sounds so weird to say out loud, but I'm envious of Elizabeth Smart. She **appears** (because who really knows what goes on beyond closed doors for her) to be doing so well. Why? Because she had a loving family who helped her through it. Makes me envious. Why couldn't we all have had that? Why can't our families still give us that? It seems that she is an intelligent and strong young woman so I give her great credit in all she's endured. I wish I'd been in her family.

Sorry, that didn't answer your questions, but it's what I think everytime I see anything about this courageous young woman.

That's ok. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I agree, Elizabeth does appear to be a very well adjusted young woman.

I haven't been following the case but from what I have seen she is indeed lucky to have a loving supportive family.

Yes, I think he has some sort of mental illness, but yes, I also think he deserves to go to jail. Despite his mental illness, he knew what he was doing and knew it was wrong. He's one screwed up individual, but he knew enough to keep this secret, to threaten Elizabeth's family to keep her under control, to hide her. Sounds like he knew what he was doing.

That's what I think too. He wasn't so sick that he couldn't plan this abduction and attempt to carry out others (didn't he try to abduct her cousin not long after he took Elizabeth?). I'm glad that he was found guilty.

I KNOW he is mentally ill, there is no way a sane person would do this kind of thing. However as Allie said he deserves to be put in jail because he DID know what he was doing. To many people get away with crimes because they are "mentally ill". "Mental illness" in my opinion is not a valid excuse for committing a crime.

I totally agree with you. I do think, now that he's been found guilty, that he needs to "pay" for his crimes.

in my opinion if he was smart enough to do it, and then have the nerve to keep her under wraps not far from her own home, that was like taunting society. He knew exactly what he was doing.
