I'm not sure it ever goes away completely, it hasn't for me anyway.
For me personally, it's still there.
I like how you refer to it as a "Shadow"...
To me it's similar to a Rose, the scent doesn't ever really truly go away it just "Fades"...

I wouldn't think of it as a rose. More like a rotting, stinking garbage that perhaps will fade. Sorry. I just can't think of it as something good to begin with.

So like you said to me I think of them in a negative way like garbage.
