dyk, I just looked through the pictures of my high school reunion (it was last night) - comparing them in high school, them now, and myself

dyk, I'm skinner than a bunch of the former skinny girls are now

dyk, I'm horrible, but I won't lie - I'm a little smug about it.

dyk, the odd thing is that I was NEVER made fun of for being overweight, so it's not a revenge thing

dyk, I really wish I could have made it

PInkabi Rose Sheds Her Skin

Pinkabi Rose was a little garden snake.

She lived among the beautiful wildflowers that grew by the edge of the pond in Sweet Meadow.

Every day while Pinkabi slithered around the wildflowers of the meadow, past the rocks on the shore and into the shallow waters of the pond, she thought about what it would be like to shed her skin and grow up.

The more she slithered, the more she thought, and the more nervous she became because she had never shed her skin before.

One day Pinkabi slithered down the bank to the pond and she bumped into her friend, Blush.

“What’s wrong Pinkabi?” Blush asked. “You look upset.”

Pinkabi sighed. “I am going to shed my skin soon and I’m nervous.”

Blush smiled at Pinkabi. “New things are scary. Just remember that you are perfectly made and this is part of who you are. It is your next step in growing up.”

Pinkabi wasn’t convinced. “Were you scared when you shed your skin?” she asked Blush.

Blush nodded. “I was. But I believe in God and He is always with us.”

Pinkabi slithered on thinking about trusting and God always being with her until she ran into her friend, Magenta, who was napping on a rock.

“Hi Magenta,” Pinkabi said, curling up beside her.

“What’s wrong, Pinkabi?”

Pinkabi told Magenta about shedding her skin.

Magenta nudged Pinkabi with her nose. “Don’t be scared, Pinkabi,” she said. “A spirit of fear never helped anyone get anything done!”

Pinkabi only half smiled.

Magenta started to slither away. She looked back at Pinkabi and shouted, “It’s an adventure. It might be fun!”

Pinkabi still wasn’t convinced.

Pinkabi sat alone for a long time before her friend Crimson slithered by.

“Crimson,” Pinkabi said, “Do you think shedding my skin will be fun since that’s what I’m made to do?”

Crimson stopped slithering. “I do!” she said, excited.

Pinkabi wrinkled her nose.

Crimson laughed. “You should think of all the fun and new things you will get to do when your skin is shed and you grow! Thinking positive will help you overcome your fear and then you won’t be scared anymore.”

Pinkabi unwrinkled her nose and managed a little smile. But she still wasn’t sure growing up would be fun.

Pinkabi was munching on crickets when her friend Coral came over to share.

“I heard you are going to shed your skin,” Coral said, “Do you know how you are going to do it yet?”

Pinkabi stopped munching to look at Coral. “Um, no, I don’t.”

Coral crunched on a cricket. “It’s always good to have a plan. Set a goal and keep that goal in mind to help you stay on track. That’s how I shed my skin.”

Pinkabi’s eyes widened. “You shed your skin?” she asked.

Coral smiled wide before she slithered away. “Yep! Just last week.”

Pinkabi looked at Coral’s shiny new skin. It was very pretty.

Pinkabi couldn’t believe she hadn’t noticed Coral’s new skin. She told her friend Berry all about it.

“Berry,” Pinkabi said. “All our friends have good ideas about trusting how I was made, and thinking positive… and even about making a plan for shedding my skin. But the only thing I am positive about is that I don’t know what my plan should be!”

Berry giggled. “Pinkabi, making a plan is easy! Just watch your friends and see how they do it. It’s a really good idea to pay attention to all the snakes around you,” Berry told her. “Seeing them do things, like shedding their skins, can help you when it’s your turn!”

Pinkabi knew Berry was right and she slithered down the pond path in search of more friends to watch.

Pinkabi’s twin friends Cherry and Blossom were splashing in a puddle. “Do you two know about shedding your skin?” Pinkabi asked them. “I’m trying to make a plan for when I shed mine.”

Cherry wiggled her tail with excitement. “I know some,” she said.

“And I know what she doesn’t know,” Blossom said, “Pinkabi, what do you need to know?”

Cherry slithered in front of Blossom and looked at Pinkabi closely. “Your skin will get too small and feel tight.”

“Is your skin tight?” Blossom asked. “Because it will get tight.”

Cherry said, “Then it will lose its color.”

“And your skin will get flaky. Are you flaky?” Blossom asked.

Cherry and Blossom kept talking and asking questions even as Pinkabi slithered away.

Pinkabi slithered to the edge of the pond and looked at her reflection, thinking about what Cherry and Blossom had told her.

“Hi, Pinkabi,” her friend Carnation said as she slithered by. “What are you looking at?”

Pinkabi looked away from the pond and at her friend. “I was just thinking that my skin doesn’t look tight. And it doesn’t seem to be a different color either. Cherry and Blossom said that will happen before I shed my skin. ”

Carnation smiled. “It will. That happened to me, too. But, Pinkabi, you can’t rush it. You can’t make your skin shed just because you want it to. I tried and all I did was hurt my tummy from rubbing it too hard trying to make my skin shed.”

Pinkabi shook her head. “That doesn’t sound good.”

“It wasn’t. So you have to wait and let it happen naturally.”

Pinkabi slithered her way through the wildflowers thinking about all the things her friends had told her when she bumped into her friend Mauve.

“Mauve,” Pinkabi said. “Does my skin look tight to you?”

Mauve squinted at Pinkabi. “Why?” she asked as she looked at her skin. “Are you about to shed it?”

Pinkabi nodded. “I think so. And I’m kind of nervous. But, I’ve been talking to some friends and I think now I’m excited, too.

Mauve finished looking over Pinkabi. “Your skin does appear to be too small.”

Pinkabi smiled, very happy to hear that.

“Listen,” Mauve said. “When your skin begins to flake, you need to pay attention so that you can shed your skin the right way without getting too tired or taking too long. When it’s time to grow, you need to grow and your old skin has to come off.”

Pinkabi nodded seriously. “Ok, Mauve, I can do that,” she said.

Pinkabi was slithering back to the pond when her friend Fuchsia stopped her.

“Pinkabi!” Fuchsia shouted. “Look! Your skin is flaking!”

Pinkabi curled her tail around to get a better look. “It is,” she said. “I am really going to shed my skin!”

Pinkabi felt excited, but only for a moment. “Fuchsia,” she said, “my skin started shedding all on its own... but what do I do if it doesn’t finish on its own?”

Fuchsia slithered up to Pinkabi. “Silly snake,” she said. “Your skin didn’t start shedding on its own! You’ve been slithering around the meadow all day helping it!”

Pinkabi perked up. “I have?”

Fuchsia shook her head. “You have. And if your skin gets stuck just think of something you’ve never done before, like slithering backward!”

Pinkabi giggled. “Or rolling over!” she exclaimed.

“That’s right,” Fuchsia said. “You can do it Pinkabi!”

Pinkabi was busy rolling in the grass and trying to slither backward when her friend Orchid came by the pond for a drink.

“Pinkabi, what on Earth are you doing?” she asked.

Pinkabi didn’t stop rolling. “I am trying to shed my skin in a way that no snake has ever shed her skin before!”

Orchid’s curled up to watch Pinkabi work. “Is it working?” she asked.

Pinkabi stopped rolling to catch her breath.

She looked over her flaky skin. “I think so!” she exclaimed.

Orchid stretched out before slithering away. “Just remember,” she said in a serious voice. “Now that you have started you cannot stop.”

Orchid continued, “You have to stick with what you are doing and keep trying even if it doesn’t seem to work right away or it gets hard.”

No longer nervous, Pinkabi nodded her head and prepared to roll again. She was determined to shed her skin.

Pinkabi Rose spent most of her afternoon rolling in the prickly grass and rubbing against rocks the way she’d seen other snakes do when they shed their skins.

She rolled and rubbed until her tummy growled with hunger and she knew she needed to stop to eat.

As she slithered into the meadow to find some crickets, her friend Cotton Candy slithered up beside her.

“I saw you shedding your skin, Pinkabi,” Cotton Candy said. “You are doing a great job! It’s almost all the way off and your new skin is so shiny!”

Pinkabi smiled wide, happy her friend had noticed her hard work. “Thank you, Cotton Candy,” she said, as she spied a group of crunchy crickets.

Cotton Candy darted after the crickets alongside Pinkabi. “Be sure to finish shedding every single flake of your old skin. You must complete the job you started!” Cotton Candy captured some crickets and slithered away.

By nightfall, Pinkabi had shed all her skin and she slithered to the edge of the pond to admire how the moonlight reflected her new shiny scales.

She smiled at her reflection, remembering how nervous she was just that morning.

A second reflection joined hers in the pond. “Your new skin is beautiful, Pinkabi,” her friend Lavender said. “Everyone in the meadow is talking about how well you did today.”

Pinkabi smiled at her friend. “Thank you! I can’t believe I was nervous about it this morning. It was so easy!”

Lavender agreed with a nod. “Yep, it isn’t hard at all. And now that you have new skin, you are bigger and you can have more responsibilities... you know, things you are in charge of and things you are allowed to do!”

“That’s really the best part of shedding my skin,” Pinkabi said. “So many new opportunities for fun! I guess it’s not so scary to grow up after all!”

Pinkabi said goodbye to Lavender and slithered toward her nest in the wildflowers. She had had a very big day and was getting tired.

Along the way she thought about how many friends had helped her by listening to her worries and giving her good advice.

Pinkabi also remembered that God was with her each step of the way, guiding her to the right friends at the right time and giving her courage when she was scared.

As she made her way into her wildflower patch, Pinkabi’s new skin felt smooth and silky as she slithered in the cool grass under the moonlight.

She had a happy heart and was so thankful to be specially made the way she was.

Pinkabi Rose curled into a coil in her nest in the wildflowers at the edge of the pond in Sweet Meadow and dreamt of the ways she could share her happiness with God and all the friends that had helped her today.
