Questions about salads
Fri, 06-13-2014 - 4:08pm

I had the idea that you have to eat your salad first then the main course, but then I read the healthiest way was the othe way around. So anyone knows which is better and healthiest?

Another question do heart of plam cointains any calories?

I don't know that it's healthier one way or another to eat salad before the main course or after but I eat mine first because I prefer it that way.

And I don't know a thing about heart of palm other than my husband loves them. :-)

If you think about it with the aim of not wanting to eat too much at dinner, salad is better first because it's high volume, high fiber and likely to fill you up more prior to the main course.

As GR says, salad first will fill you up, plus if you make it a nutritious salad, you'll be getting more vitamins and nutrients than you would in a starch.  Eat more salad, eat less starch.  Hearts of palm do have calories, although minimal (40 cal per cup but I had to look that up).  Overall, you really won't eat enough to cause weight gain!

You've gotten great advice.  I have also read that it is bad to eat starchy, high-glycemic index foods (e.g., bread, pasta) first, because it makes your glucose/sugar spike quickly.  Proteins supposedly provide for a longer term glucose availability so that, hopefully, you are not as hungry immediately following a meal.
