I've never really done cheat days, but I've been leaning more towards them as I get stuck. But I'm curious, how much cheating do you guys actually do on cheat day? I'm not saying "let's eat 3000 calories!" but do you cheat on ONE thing or do you cheat throughout the day?

Weekends are really rough for me. One day I'll do good, but I always manage to succumb on the other and just cheat away. (Which is also why I'm leaning towards a cheat day...) For example, I went to the movies on Sunday and had a large popcorn (though I'd say I probably ate about  ⅓ to ½ of it, my mom ate the rest) and then we went to lunch and I had a hamburger and some fries. A total cheat day.

Really looking for your thoughts on whether this can be damaging or a good thing - to go off "diet" for one day a week.

Erin,

That 1/3 or 1/2 of large popcorn and burger and fries for lunch is totally okay for a cheat day. We were taught in our fitness trainer course that you can eat wahever you want on a cheat day as long as it is only one cheat day per week. It keeps you from feeling deprived. That helps to stick to your diet long term. I personally don't do a whole cheat day, but a cheat meal once a week. In that meal I eat whatever I want -- burger and fries, or fried chicken and biscuit, or a chineese buffet and even a dessert. I've found that it doesn't affect my weight loss and really keeps me from the sence of deprivation. So go ahead, and enjoy your one cheat meal. No need to feel guilty about it.

I have never done cheat days either but my brother-in-law lost 80 lbs by counting calories and having cheat days. I'm just not sure how it would work when you spend all week being very careful and then just have at it on cheat days. I think even cheat days would have to be very moderate or your effort is all wasted.

Thanks! It didn't affect my weight so I'm happy. Of course it could have prevented further loss, but it definitely didn't cause an increase. :)

My SIL lost 96 lbs by having a cheat day.  Actually, she stayed on her diet S-F and on Saturday they went out for dinner to the same restaurant and she ate Veal Parmesan with Spaghetti.  That was her favorite meal, and she said she could stay on her diet all week by knowing she was going to have that meal on Saturday.

When I was working, the girls used to order pizza for lunch every Friday.  I had a hard and fast rule that I could not order with them unless I was 5 lbs down from the last time.  Once I had that pizza, I could not order again until I was 5 lbs down from that days weight.  I know you aren't supposed to reward yourself with food, but it worked very well for me.

Now I have a very hard time with a cheat day, or even a cheat meal.  It always seems to turn into a binge for days!  I just don't have the self control that I had when I was younger.
