Skip dinners, Does that really work?

I have heard so many people for years, (coworkers at work, acquaintances, etc etc) that they always say cause they have heard it from someone else that if a person wants to loose weight they have to skip dinner cause dinner can make you fat since you do not have enough time to digest the food cause some hours later you go to bed and also ause you wil feel full for that.
Are these people making a mistake by skipping dinner or do they may be saying the truth?
In the case skipping dinner is bad what are the best foods to eat at dinner without adding some pounds to it?
