Are burpees REALLY necessary? Do they really do what everyone says they do? Is there a good substitute? Ugh--I dread them but do them because everyone says I need to!"

Thanks,

Konnie

HI Konnie!

I hate burpees but do them anyways. When I want to challenge myself but can't really decide what to do, I'll throw in a burpee workout.

They're just a high intensity exercise so anything that gets your heart rate that high is good,  Ones that have you down in that position works the core a little more, eg. mountain climbers, star jacks on the ground.  You can add push ups to those, too.  But, even standing, there are squat jumps, plyo lunges, sprints, star jacks upright, kickboxing moves that can get your heart rate up.  Burpees are good because you can add variations to them, push ups, etc but you can do the same w/ mountain climbers.

I never do burpees. I am not a jump around work out person...I think you should never do anything you hate. Better to do a less intense workout you enjoy than not do a high intensity one because you don't enjoy it.

{{thumbs up}} SJ, I agree. I am far more apt to really give something I enjoy my all than something I hate doing.

Theyare not my favorite but I do them anyways. I always feel like I did a thorough workout after burpees.
