Hi Jami and welcome to the board! I think motivation is something everyone struggles with. Here are a few things I have learned to do from other people:

Do you have a couple of new workout outfits that you feel good in that you want to be seen in? Lay them out in a place where you will see them often.

Also, talk about your gym membership with people. The more you talk about it-the more you will think about it and it might help motivate you to get there more, especially if your friends and co-workers ask you about it enough.

I pay for my gym membership by the year, and it is a high end gym, so one thing that motivates me is that I know that the more often I go, the cheaper each visit is...I put going to the gym on my work calendar, so every time I look at my schedule all day, I see that I am going. I make it a rule to unpack and repack my gym bag as soon as I get home, and to take it with me in the morning. I walk to work, so carrying the bag is a good reminder that I am going to the gym. I have a plan each week for when I am going to the gym, and what I am going to do. I work with a trainer, and the nights I am with him, I know if i don't go, he doesn't get paid, which is a powerful motivator for me. I like certain classes, so that motivates me. My gym has an indoor pool, and on the weekends I sometimes pretend that I am staying in a fancy hotel and think of swimming indoors, especially on a cold day, as a luxury. I have a calendar, and I write down what I did at the gym and add it up at the end of the day and the week. In the beginning, I used to tell myself that I idn't have to actually work out, I just had to go o the gym...which for me involves a 15 - 30 minute walk depending on whether I start from home or work. I never actually went and idn't work out...but I lie to myself a lot - planning to just bike for 20 minutes, or swim half as many laps as I really should. Once I am there, i say 'it is only 20 minutes out of your life' and frequently I go longer than I set as the minimum. I also tell myself that while I am at the gym, I am not sitting on the couch eating... Hope some of this helps SJ

Hi Jami!

The previous comments give some great advice but I also wanted to share a tip that worked for me. I actually love to workout but I was the same in that I didn't really like going to the gym, even for a fun workout class. I would suggest finding an workout video to do in the convenience of your own home. There are some out there that are not so great, but there are also some out there that are awesome and even a lot of fun. You can then make a challenge out of it setting a goal of doing the video for the next 30, 60, 90 days and tracking your progress each week. Currently I am doing a challenge for myself and posting my results and feedback on my blog, which I find holds me accountable.

Hope this helps and good luck on your goal of losing 10 pounds!

Welcome to the Healthy Living board! In addition to the great advice you've already been given, what do you enjoy doing? I think that's the best way to get started.
