10 Years ago my husband and I scraped together the money to pay for a yearly family gym membership because they had a special offer that if you enrolled that year-you got the same price forever. As I was writing out the check Friday I was soooo

Yup - I know I my YMCA membership was $65 per month, and when you upgrade to the plus it was $115 per month. As a personal trainer I get the membership for free - but when I was paying even though it was a lot, I still felt like it was worth it. I figured there were loads of other less healthy things I spent my money on, so the gym membership balanced things out!

This is a great topic, actually. A gym membership has always been one of my first priorities (luckily it's a choice among extracurriculars and not a gym membership vs paying for heat) since I started working out.

I remember that my Bally's membership had a high initiation fee with a low $125 a year, which I eventually sold because there is no Bally's close by to where I live now.

I think I belong to the gym in Boston that Jean belonged to 25 years ago. I didn't pay an initiation fee - not sure why but I think they waive it a lot. I pay $980 per year and just learned that my health insurance will reimburse $150. The gym was the hot place 25 years ago, now it is a little worn. But they have a gorgeous outdoor pool that I use a lot in the summer, an indoor pool that is seldom that busy - I try to swim once or twice a week. They have a variety of classes but not an overwhelming amount. I take Pilates a couple times a week and Zumba maybe once a month...I run once or twice a week, and I have only waited for a treadmill in January...I lift three nights a week with a trainer - which of course is extra. But it gets me to the gym, not just on lifting nights but on the days in between. They have a good variety of free weights and machines, and they allow you to make noise while you lift...some people don't like that in a gym, but I do. The gym is owned by Mass General Hospital, and they run a program for their employees called 'Be Fit' where teams of about 25 from different departments get access to a trainer, a nutritionist, and the gym. The hospital also deeply discounts for their employees. And the gym is located in a housing complex where a lot of people have lived for. Long time. So the gym has a wide demographic age, fitness, income wise, ethnically, and weight wise. Some people are there to socialize, and I guess there is some 'meet ups' going on, but the scene isn't about what you are wearing or how buff you are - everyone is friendly and encouraging. I love my gym and it is a big part of my life. The people on the desk always make me feel welcome and I am always glad I went. SJ

My gym membership is pretty cheap, but the gym itself is a no-frills gym.

Your gym sounds awesome. The one I belonged to was the Sky Club in the Devonshire building but it was tiny, no pools. You paid for location. I think we've talked Boston gyms before. I also belonged to one at Charles River Park--it was a great gym and free, as part of the amenities. It cost a lot to join it as an outsider, though. It was next to Mass General.
