I had baby number 2 over a year ago and have not been able to lose weight no matter what I do. After baby number 1 I was able to go back to my exercise routine and regular eating patterns and lost the baby weight but this time it is just not happening for me.  I have seen a lot of conficting info on the Internet and have gotten nothing helpful from my OB/GYN.  Please help.

There is an informative series of publicatons called "My Bright Future" available from the Health Resources and Services Administartion that provides basic fitness and healthy eating information for women in English and Spanish that might be helpful to you. There is even information about communicating and collaborating with your health care provider to achieve your goals. Hope this helps.

Hi Dana, and welcome to gymrats.  I know that after baby number two, I had a reallly hard time getting back into shape.  I felt like my metabolism died.  Fear not, though, there is much hope!  There are many great trainers on this board, but, with the summer holidays, some of them are "off" until early next week.

I can tell you, from personal experience, that as we age, our metabolism slows down so I have had to exercise even more than I used to just to maintain.  What has helped the most, for me, is to keep a daily journal of not only what exercise I do, but also what I eat and drink.  It's amazing that, when I have to write it down, how I learn how many little snacks and drinks add to my daily intake.  I have made replacements in my diet such as replacing all sugar with stevia (no calories), replacing all soda (even diet) with water, significantly increased my vegetable intake and decreased my meat intake, and increased my workout regimine.  I am currently back to my pre-baby weight, but even so, it's not distributed the same, so I continue to refine my diet and exercise routine.  As we age, we lose muscle so weight training becomes more important.  Our skin gets thinner, too, so I can see the fat wherease, before I could not.

Feel free to post in our daily journal, a couple topics below...and be patient for some of the other trainers to return, as they will have much more educated feedback for you.

What is your current diet and exercise plan like?

You've gotten some good advice already.  As getting fit and losing weight goes, it takes diet and exercise. For a good idea on what to eat, the USDA pyramid is a good source:

http://www.choosemyplate.gov/

On exercise, start small. Can you walk briskly 3-4 days a week for 20-30 mins? Start with that, then increase.  The goal is to burn 500 calories a day through exercise.  But, you don't want to jump into it all at once.  Add slowly each week.  Eventually, you want to start strength training. It's a good idea to start now but again take it slowly. Do you have access to weights or a gym?

That's great to know--about the publication. I've never heard of it and need to look into it.
