I thought I'd share this since we were talking awhile back about finding new exercises. I haven't seen these before and think you could do a lot w/ them, eg adding tubes, doing it w/ feet on an unstable surface, etc.

What I'm looking for are cardio ideas for the upper body. I'm working w/ a dancer who has stress fractures on her toes on one foot. She can walk but can't point or flex her feet w/ weight w/out pain.

I wish I had a Smith machine! I only have my basic stuff, TRX, BOSU, ballast balls, tubes. body bar. I had her do a million variations of squats, with tubes on the bodybar, with the TRX, one legged squats.

I swam almost the whole time that my foot was broken - the break was in the fifth metatarsal, so toes might be different, but for me swimming is an upper body more than lower body. I also did squats using the Smith Machine - might not be cardio enough but good weight training. I kept the weight on my heels and the bar gave me support. Actually the only things I didn't do were lunges, leg press, and dead lifts - and running of course... SJ

If she doesn't put stress on her foot, how about that rowing machine?!

I strongly recommended spinning for her, as well as the shoes.

Spin, focusing on the "up" stroke, walking in swimming pool, pilates...can you search for workouts for seniors where they are working out on a chair?, floor work where the moves are repetitive and fast (e.g., seated "v" with bent knees in air, in and out fast for 30 - 60 seconds, etc.)

Gee, these are all things I should have done when my foot was broken.
