What were you doing in or out of the gym when you were in your best shape?

I am 54, and I have to say that this is the time of my life when I am the most fit. I was thinner when I was in my thirties, and I walked and swam off and on my whole adult life, but in the past seven years, I have learned that my body can do things I had no idea were possible for me.

I love working out at the gym.

Very cool. I think you're lifting heavy weights, too! I have to get back to more serious lifting. It makes a big difference.

"I am not thin, but I love my body - how powerful it is, and how strong I feel. "

That's exactly why I work out. They've shown that people who work out for aesthetics don't keep it up as much as people who do it to be healthier. I'd much rather be heavier and strong/powerful than thin and out of shape. No question.

Being the overanalytical person that I am (analysis/paralysis), I would have to ask what your defintion of "best shape" is.

If it's lowest body fat percentage, when I was around 12, I was rail thin AND a competitive swimmer.

I didn't want to define it because I wanted it based on your perception of what "best" means. I was probably thinnest when I was training for the marathon and was in good shape but not as strong overall as when I did a lot more crosstraining. But, I was still in pretty darn good shape!

I don't want to misrepresent myself - I am ALL about the clothes! I felt just as healthy 60 pounds heavier - but I hated shopping in the 'misses' section - I love wearing cute stuff and although I love the benefits of working out, it is how much I love food that keeps me from being thin!

I have never been married, and I am the 'sophisticated' aunt that lives in the city. I like to behave in a way that shows the young girls in the family that there are choices you can make in life - that I am happy with my wonderful life. Having a fit body is part of that.

LOL, I wish working out could make me grow taller! I'd be at the gym non-stop if that were the case. I hate shopping in the petite section.

That's so cool. I loved living in the city and being able to walk everywhere. Somehow I got derailed and ended up living the suburban housewife, two kids life. But, when I go back to the city, I just love the feel of it all. Well, as long as I'm not driving.;-)
