Hi Erica! Like you, I was concerned about the spiritual aspect of Yoga until I actually got into it and realized I had a lot of wrong preconceived notions about it. I started classes at a Christian organization and I was so happy that I gave it a try.
I think the only thing you can really do is keep practicing. Downward dog looked so easy in videos and pictures until I actually started doing it myself. lol There are a many poses that I have to do the easy form or modified version of. Does your instructor offer modified poses for beginners? You might want to try those first until you are more confident.
