My first mud race

I wasn't going to write a report but I actually have a few free minutes and figured "why not?"...

This past weekend, I ran the Seven Springs Mud on the Mountain race with a group of friends. 7 miles and 22 obstacles sounded like a treat but to make it even better, Sandy dumped 22 inches of snow on the mountain. Craaaaazy! Luckily, Seven Springs was on top of it and used a Bobcat to clear out most of the path for the race but the cold definitely made it more of a challenge.

For those who don't know, Seven Springs is a ski resort; The race took place on the slopes. The hills were incredible. The challenges ranged from climbing ropes to army crawling through tunnels to scaling boulders and much more. On one of the obstacles, I was crawling through this tiny dark tunnel through mud when I heard my friends asking where I was. As it turns out, they had all elected to skip that particular one. My gloves got so mud covered that my hands started to hurt badly from the moisture/cold. I took off my gloves and grabbed a heat sheet. I was running down a mud covered hill with my hands tucked into my armpits for warmth when I fell - for the first time. My second fall wasn't as bad because I was moving pretty slow at that point.

It was so fun and I am DEFINITELY planning to do another one. I think; however, that I will wait for Spring because the cold and water obstacles do not mix well at all. My poor hands took about 24 hours to fully recover!

The race is not timed but it took our group about 2 hours and 20 minutes to finish. I'm so proud of all of us:)

Running in mud?  Okay, that sounds like fun.  Running in cold, I like that better than running in heat.  Running in cold mud?  No thanks.  Good for you - I would have bailed at the first hint of sub-fifty temps. Snaps to Maria for white-knuckling that one. I would have been the lady in the lodge in the corner with a book and hot chocolate.

Hi Maria,

Congratulations on trying something different like that! Where was that race? Was that for kids too?

Have you ever heard of The Biggest Loser RunWalk (the official Biggest Loser race series) or Spartan Race?

Spartan Race designed a mud run/obstacle run for Biggest Loser RunWalk that is about 3 miles. It's called The Biggest Loser Off-Road Challenge and they have them around the country. Anywhere there is a Spartan Race, there will also be a Biggest Loser RunWalk Off-Road Challenge (but you sign up for them at the BLRW website).

They have obstacles for kids too which is really cute. They get their own T-shirt and medal (so do the adults in the adult race).

I don't know what it is about mud, but it makes working out more fun!
