Hand weights while walking?

Does anyone carry hand weights while walking? Is there any benefit? What weights do you carry and for how far? Thanks!

HI and welcome to the board! I've always heard that hand weights is not a good idea when walking and has little to no benefit. Instead, you may want to lift weights after your walk.

I took advantage of a training session at a local gym once and they said never carry hand weights while walking. They even discouraged ankle weights and said walking with weights can damage tendons and ligaments.  I am not great about it but am trying to do some weight lifting before I walk.

I've never tried hand weights; I did use leg weights a few years ago, after healing from an injury. It helped build up the strength in my legs.
