Why do people walk backwards?

I've been trying to get to the walking track a little more often and from time to time I see people walking laps backwards. What is the reason and is this something I should consider doing?

HI Cathee and welcome! It's great to see another walker on board. I too used to see people walking backwards at the gym and thought it was silly until my doctor prescribed it for some back trouble I was having. Walking backwards uses different muscles than walking forward and it can help relieve tension in your lower back. Also, many senior citizens walk backwards to exercise their brain. It is much harder than it looks and requires a lot of thought and concentration.

Give it a try!

I've tried walking backwards. It is very hard. It takes amazing concentration and different muscles. I was a little sore from my experience. You should try it! :)
