Ever heard of Diabulimia?

Frankly I hadn't heard of it either at least by that name! Often found in teenage female type 1 diabetics.  According to the Joslin Diabetes Center "Diabulimia, an eating disorder involving purposeful restriction of insulin, affects approximately 30 percent of women at some point in the course of their diabetes."

When I read further about it I realized I had seen and heard of this. Even in type 2 diabetics who aren't yet on insulin. Women who refuse to eat sufficently to survive or purge after eating or exercise excessively to keep their blood sugars down and have an altered view of their body are all suffering from this complication.

There is a new book out about this condition: So begins Maryjeanne Hunt’s memoir of a life lived with both an eating disorder and type 1 diabetes. The book, released this January, is called “Eating to Lose: Healing from a Life of Diabulimia.”

Is this something you have seen or experienced? Lets talk about this!

Thanks for starting this discussion and letting us know about the new book. I think that men can also have diabulimia, and this may be less often recognized in men. ~Lynn @Glucerna
