How does being fat get you the Diabetes?

How does being fat get you the Diabetes?

I understand there is link between being overweight and diabetes but not really sure how it works. My husband has diabetes and the doctor told us if he loses some weight he won't need medicataion right now. He went to the doctor yesterdayt and is doing good so it is working for him.

You're right that there is a link between being overweight and developing diabetes. Not everyone who is overweight will develop diabetes, but being overweight increases your risk. Type 2 diabetes is often due to insulin resistance, where your body doesn't utilize insulin effectively. A higher amount of body fat contributes to insulin resistance. Losing weight and getting regular exercise both help decrease insulin resistance and lower blood sugar levels. It sounds like your husband is making a good start. ~Lynn @Glucerna

Kay, I would like to take it a little further than Lynn did. A small amount of weight loss, even 10 percent, can bring your husband's blood sugars under control. Of course he needs to eat well and he needs to exercise. It is recommended that diabetics get 150 minutes of exercise per week. He doesn't have to throw his body on a treadmill at a gym unless he wants to! He can start with just going for walks at a moderate pace. One of the other recommendations is that he get 10,000 steps per day. Of course he needs to ask his doctor about this but healthy eating and exercise are the foundation of good diabetic care by both the diabetic and their healthcare provider.
