Bacterial endocarditis is an infection of either:
• heart’s inner lining (endocardium) or
the
• heart valves

Bacterial endocarditis is a serious — and
sometimes fatal — ­illness. Two things cause
it to occur: ­bacteria and a weakened heart.
Men, women and children and people of
all racial and ethnic groups can get it. In the
United States, there are about 29,000 cases
of bacterial endocarditis a year."
