Flu / Flu shot

Good morning everyone. Just wondering about everyone's opinions or advice on the flu shot. I have never got one due to fear of still getting sick. This year I had just about decided to get the shot and then I came down with the flu.  :(  I went to the Dr early and he put me on Tamiflu, so I'm not doing to bad. Have had fever off and on for 3 days, not over 101. Has anyone else had the flu this year? How can we speed our recovery? Does the flu damage our heart any? I have a book about Women's Heart Health, but it says nothing about the flu or fevers.

Thanks everyone and stay well,

Rhonda

Laughing Hi Lori, I am doing much better than I expected. Was scared to catch the flu and scared to get the shot. LOL Might get brave and get the shot next year. I went to the Dr after the 2nd day of not feeling good. So got medicated early.  I did get the shingles shot this year. My hubby had shingles a few years ago and they were painful. Hope you are doing ok.

I've gotten a flu shot every year for the past 18 years or so. I used to work in a doctor's office and was worried about catching the flu from a sick patient, bringing it home to my kids, etc. What I learned quickly was that if I was feeling at all sick with anything else, a little cold, etc---don't get the flu shot until I felt healthy. Otherwise it would make the "little cold" into a really bad cold. Ever since I learned that I haven't had any kind of illness or side effect from the flu shot, other than occasional minor soreness at the injection site. And I haven't had the flu in all of those years.

However, the other day I saw a friend who told me that he just got over the flu. He had a flu shot in the fall but got sick anyway. An RN friend of his told him that apparently one of the strains included in the vaccine has mutated so some people who got flu shots will catch the flu anyway this year. So now I am crossing my fingers (and washing my hands!) hoping that I don't get it. I'm in southern California, I don't know if this mutation is being seen nationally or just around here.

I don't think that the flu per se affects the heart. The biggest issue is secondary infections, becoming susceptible to bacterial infections when in a weakened state of health. Probably anybody with heart problems should notify their doctor when they get sick with flu, so their condition can be monitored if necessary.

I haven't gotten the Shingles vaccine yet. My mother didn't know if I ever had chicken pox, and if I didn't have it then I can't develop Shingles? But when my kids were little they got chicken pox and I didn't come down with it, so I probably have the antibodies. I think I need to talk to my doctor about this.

I hope that you ladies can keep healthy for the rest of this winter.

Hi ELC11. Thanks for the information. I am better after just 6 days. Having a little dizziness, but the tamiflu info said it can cause it. I also live in So. Cal. We have had 8 people die from the flu here. I hope the season will end soon.

Hi Lori. Hope you are over the shingles soon. I heard that once you've had them you never get them again. I don't know if it's true or not.  I dont know where our winter is.  Guess it's all back east. It was 77 here yesterday. :(  Most of our state is in a severe drought. We need rain and snow very badly. Guess I will try and get some cleaning done today. ugh...LOL  Have a great day,

Rhonda

Hi Rhonda,

My husband and I just got flu shots 2 days ago and we both have some minor body aches and pains.  I was not going to get the flu shot, but I heard something about 19 people recently died here where I live in TN who got the flu and did not get a flu shot.  Don't hold me too those statistics, I just overhead the info.  It scared me enough, so got the shot.
