Do Muslim women want to wear the burqa?

Many veiled women argue that they do so out of choice, but i'm forced behind the veil, i wear the niqab against my will. I'm unable to feel the sun and breeze on my skin. Islamic fundamentalism is a reaction to Western feminism, the decision of my father to banish me from Europe goes that way. The burqa is not compulsory in Bahrain and is not specified in the Quran but many women are warned of the wraith of God unless they succomb to life behind the veil. It is often women in a community who force other women to wear the burqa, my mother-in-law wants me to wear the niqab with the mesh while my cousin is allowed to keep it lifted. Now my oldest daughter wear the veil, for now a simple headscarf but in her mid-teens she will pass to the integral veil, it doesn't matter, unlike me she's grown in this context and it will be less traumatic. The niqab prevents me normal interpersonal relations but now i'm used to it and try to rebel is no use, after all i'm respected in this community. We are victim of the conception of woman seen as a tempter, the first day i wore the niqab at age 19 i felt a pang in my heart when i realized that outside home i couldn't see the world if not distorced by the mesh, all that gave me the blues and looking my image in the mirror i had a shock of non recognition. Now the worst is passed and i use the unveiled woman instead of the ogre to scare my children if they don't obey. :-)

Keep in mind that the niqab is part of our culture, my husband is less strict than his mother but he's immersed in this culture and he too prefers me faceless in public, for him i could keep the mesh lifted but his mother is firm.

Hi Aisha,

You say that other women force the burqa on you. What does your husband say? Does he want you to wear it or not?
