Doomsday preppers

Has anyone watched that show Doomsday Preppers? I stumbled upon it this weekend and my husband and I watched for hours. We couldn't drag ourselves away. Are those people just freaks that the media is taking advantage of or should we all really be concerned about some of the things they are thinking might happen: solar flares, nuclear attacks, flu pandemics, tidal waves

Do you think we are at the end of days? Why? Are you preparing? How?

I really don't feel we are at the "end of days" as in the rapture or anything like that but I do feel as though there have been an awful lot of unfortunate events that seem to be happening. With many of us completely dependent on electricity, grocery stores, and mass communications, the lack of access to those items can certainly make life difficult. The recent storm on the east coast is a prime example of disrupted life. Who on earth would have thought the power would go off for a week in lower Manhattan?

I've seen the show and I have put together an emergency kit and a few days supplies but I'm not preparing for the desctruction of mankind with safe rooms, bug out bags, and stockpiles of food. Though after watching the news the last few days I'm wondering if I need to take a few lessons from the doomsday preppers and put a little more effort into my supplies.

Hi! I've not seen the show but being affected by Sandy AND Athena, I've become determined to get better prepared. I'm not going to build a bomb shelter or stock up on food, etc. (I see a lot of places, such as Costco, that have begun promoting dried food and such.) We did buy a gas generator. I'd like to buy a gas fireplace or wood burning (though I am not a fan of the smell) but our house is too small. Maybe when we move. I'm a firm believer in vaccinations and feel as though the new "rage" of not vaccinating IS leaving us open for attacks of that nature.

I've never heard of that show, but it's certainly one I'll be checking out! Not that I believe we're at the end of days, but it's interesting to me to see how people plan to cope with extreme challenges. There was a show called The Colony once that took people from various walks of life and put them in a post-apocalyptic scenario to see how they would work together to survive. It was pretty cool to see the solutions they could come up with and even more interesting to watch how they interacted with each other.

As for preparing for some horrific disaster, I think there is only so much a person can do without becoming so obsessed that it takes over your life. To me, that's too negative of a way to live. We have a generator, mostly because we've been though hurricanes that have left us powerless for weeks... and a couple of weeks of emergency food we keep stocked during the hurricane season. Having grown up in the country, we all have knowledge of the land, plants and herbs that could come in handy in a pinch, but it's just a way of life for us, not something we decided to study up because of a doomday feeling. There's a quote I remember my dad aways using... "Necessity is the mother of invention." and I think it's very true. We can't prepare for all scenrios, but if we're hit with something unexpected, we just look at the situation, figure out needs and tackle the problem with what we have. Wink

I avoid those so-called "reality shows" that, IMO, victimize weird people. :/ I have no interest in watching such. And I don't believe in "End Times" or the "Apocalypse" or any of that. Not part of my spiritual beliefs or practices. I do believe in Karma and much of the problems we experience are a result of not only ourselves and our actions but also how our species has disrespected and damaged Nature and the planet.
