Following a religion without knowledge it

My husband and I had a couple of members of a religious group knock on our door yesterday (I won't get detailed but you probably all know who I am talking about) and two young men who would only be called by their title proceded to try to convince us to join their religion. My husband asked why they were doing what they were doing and they told us all about their duties and potential rewards. These young men claimed to be Christians but they certainly weren't like any Christians I've ever grown up with. Both admitted to having never read the Bible, only the works of their religious group. I'm not a deeply religious person but do practice the Christian religion and I can say I am one of those few people who have ever read the Bible from cover to cover. I guess I don't get how someone can say they are of a certain religious group but have no knowledge of it's religious documents. Would you immerse yourself into a lifestyle and religion without understanding what you were becomming a part of? Don't you owe it to yourself to fully investigate a religion before becomming completely controlled by it? In this day and age with almost everyone being able to read and literature from every religion available to everyone in this country, why one earth would someone not take some time to at least glance over it's mission and purpose before submitting to serving it?
