Giving up on sun tans
Mon, 07-01-2013 - 9:17am

I grew up in an age where sun tans were supposed to signify a healthy, active person. These days I rarely see anyone young with a dark tan but I do still see ladies our age looking like they've spent months on the beach. I battle with wanting a tan every summer but knowing I shouldn't.  I wonder why it is so hard for us to give up our sun tans since we are now fully aware of how bad it is for our skin. Does anyone else struggle with this?

Getting a tan has never been a priority for me, so I can't be of much help, I'm afraid.  By the end of summer I always have a bit of a tan, but it is from working in the garden or yard, not from sun-bathing. I *hate* just lying in the sun and sweating!!!  LOL

Is it the tan you are wanting or the being out in the sun?!  Either way, I guess the thing you need to ask yourself is are you willing to work at it slowly and safely (lots of sun block, etc.!).

I always had a suntan growing up, but I did live in Southern Florida!  I tanned easily back then, but now all I get is spots!  I still live close to the beach and spend a lot of time there in the summer, I am very careful.  We always take an umbrella, I wear a coverup and lots of suntan lotion!

When I was young a tan was the thing, we used to rub baby oil all over us and stay outside all day. I used to burn but only tanned after a summer in the sun and then it wasn't a great tan.......well who knew the baby oil would keep you from tanning? Now we say "DUH!"..... lol.

But you summer my dad had an aunt and uncle visit from AZ. And they looked like very old farm boots after a few years in the ..........mud........or something. And it kind of turned me off tans. I have a friend who is about 10 years younger than I am that uses the tanning bed all year around. I carp at her and her family has cancer but she won't listen.

I have a friend with a tanning bed in her basement. She is so dark brown and wrinkly she looks horrible. She thinks she looks so healthy. All I can think of is Cancer any time I see her.
