Taking grandchildren on vacations

My husband and I are trying to decide if we should take our grandchildren on vacation with us. We are going to the beach for a week. On one hand I think it would be so much fun but on the other, vacation is to vacation, not take care of children. Do you take your grands anywhere and what are some of the problems you encountered?

Well, I take my granddaughter everywhere with me, since I watch her 10-12 hrs a day, 5 days a week. The next one is home with her mom right now, since my dd is a teacher, but I will have her too, come fall, and a third one 3 months later.  It's no different than when I took my children with me, except I am older.

If you know their likes and dislikes, how to diffuse their upsets, and if they obey you, it shouldn't be any different taking grandchildren on vacation than it was taking your children.  However, IMHO, if you WANTED to take them, you just would.  If you have to ask, then don't take them.

I think it comes down to deciding what kind of vacation you want, if you want it to be about relaxing and adult activities and focusing on yourself and your dh vs putting the kids needs first. It also makes a big difference how old the grandkids are and whether they are well behaved, and trustworthy if they are older. From your comment "vacation is to vacation" it sounds like you're thinking that you want to be "off duty"---and that's okay.
