Do high school cheerleaders have the right to use Bible verses on banners during football games? A judge in Texas is expected to rule soon on this question. According to AP news, "District officials barred the Kountze High School cheerleaders from displaying banners with religious messages such as, "If God is for us, who can be against us," after the Freedom From Religion Foundation complained. The advocacy group says the messages violated the First Amendment clause barring the government - or a publicly funded school district, in this case - from establishing or endorsing a religion." read more

I have to wonder if these cheerleaders were using verses from the Koran or some other religious (Non-Christian) writings, would they have the same level of support they seem to be getting now? While I do believe they have the right to freedom of speech, I don't believe their sponsor is wise in allowing this to go on. What happens when a group shows up with non-Christian banners of support? I am willing to bet the game will be the last thing on anyone's mind.
