According to iVillage Health, a new review finds 1 in 3 women has suffered abuse. "The first major global review of violence against women finds that nearly one in three have been physically or sexually assaulted by a current or former partner.

And another study, published June 20 in The Lancet, finds that more than one-third of all female murder victims worldwide are killed by an intimate partner, a new study shows." read more

Unfortunatley I do believe this is sadly true. I have worked with many abused women and some men in my job that I had before I retired. I know personally an abused child and the toll it has taken on her life to survive this and be a productive citizen. Me! I appeared once at a domestic violence rally and talked about this after both of my parents were no longer here. What I wasn't prepared for was having my story be on the front page of the local paper. I am quite well know where I live and most people didn't know about it which was why I was asked to talk to the survivors. And I am seen as being very successful but what most people don't realize what it took to get to that point. How I knew that I didn't deserve to be abused and that I had done nothing to cause I do not know. But it allowed me to get out of the situation and survive it. Because when it happend to me was almost 60 years ago and we certainly didn't know what we know now about domestic violence.

Mary Frances, in all the years I have known you I never knew this.  What an amazing woman you are, for you certainly have accomplished a great deal in your life.

The article mentioned speaks of physical and sexual abuse. ... And then there are those who have experienced emotional abuse, which can also be so devastating.  I am 74.  There was some physical/sexual abuse, but nothing compared to the emotional abuse.  Just in the past year I have been able to move on beyond certain lingering webs that this cast around me.  I never would have dreamt that I would experience some of the things that continued work on personal growth has brought me.
