If you were in charge and could make changes to the school systems (like age requirements, textbook rules, adding or subtracting certain subjects, time requirements, etc.) what changes would you make? Why?

I'd bring back spelling and grammar (both of which seem to be skimped on these days if the way people speak is any indication!).

I'd stop firing teachers and saving sports and other extra-curriculars. Around here, tax levies only get passed (even renewals) if sports are threatened. Teachers of academic subjects --- not so

Like Carol, I'd want to bring more focus on spelling as well as handwriting.

However, really I'd like for teachers to be better recognized for the hard work they do and the amazing services that they provide to our children.

Classes wouldn't start until 10 a.m. because experts say that is about the time of day that your brain actually wakes up.

I think the US lags behind certain other countries in education. One thing I would do is lengthen the school year a bit, with less summer vacation; I would put a bigger emphasis on math, science, languages; I would put far less emphasis on sports; I would add a class or classes on how to live in the real world regarding budgeting, credit cards, banking, etc. And I'm pretty sure everyone would run me out of town. LOL

That is a required course at the university I graduated from.

I know it's unpopular but I would cut out sports.

Do you feel the introduction of IM, Email, and texting has made a negative influence on spelling and grammar?

The art of good handwriting does seem to be disappearing but honestly, is there a real need to be able to right legibly when you have word processors?

How interesting on start times. I homeschool and start school around 9AM. It has made a huge difference since the days of trying to start at 7 AM.
