How do you chose a car?

I have been arguing with some friends over how people chose the car they drive. Most people say they chose by price and manufacturer but I say people migrate toward something that suits their personality and then work out the financials. My friends think I am crazy but I think if they really sat down to think about it then they would see that is what they are doing.

Personality?

I chose mine according to what I use it for.  I take public transportation to work most of the time.  Since I don't drive that much, it gives me some leeway on gas mileage.  We have rather harsh winters, and I like to go skiing, so a 4-wheel drive is a must.  Sometimes I transport large items in my car yet I don't like to navigate a monster around town.  With all those criteria it came down to a small to mid size SUV.  Then I look at reliability and safety record.  Once I narrowed down the list to a few makes and models, I picked the one that is within my budget.  And if a new car is out of a quesiton, then something used but still under warranty.

Funny timing! I was heading to my sister's house yesterday when I nearly got hit by a person driving a car that I immediately liked. So I typically chose by style and If I see someone driving something I like then I will check it out. The car that nearly hit me was a Ford Fusion. Does anyone here drive one? Pros and Cons?

I actually don't even own one but I do think personality does factor in to it...;)...
Right now I use public transit.
If I had a vehicle it wouldn't be new and I would probably lean toward a small truck, an old muscle car, and a Harley for fun...;)...lol...
I am Dreamin' but it sure feels good...:)...

I am actually looking for a new car and would love to have some recommendations. What do you drive and why did you select it?

I used to buy strictly buy a manufacturer and then price after that. As I have gotten older I definitely look at how a car looks, but I buy one based on the needs of our family. I commute 70 miles round trip each day to work, so I need something with decently good gas mileage, but I also have 2 little ones in car seats still, so the ability to have the car seats in the back and still have passengers comfortable in my car is the dilema for me right now. I am leaning towards a mid sized SUV, and trying to find one that gets decent mpg's but also has the option of a 3rd row seat. Price is also a factor, but its frustrating. We plan on paying cash or taking out a very small car loan, i have no desire to spend 5 years paying $400 a month in a car payment plus insurance, so we'll definitely buy a used one.

I choose a car based upon its impact on the environment. Right now I am driving an all electric car and we also have a hybrid car. I love my Leaf but it doesn't get enough mileage so I am limited in how far I can take it. The charging infrastructure is just being put in place and so it is mostly useful around town and fairly close to home. We have a 6 year old hybrid car and we will probably replace that car this summer. We are leaning towards a plug in hybrid which has an electric motor for around town and a gasoline engine for going firther than that. At the moment that seems to be the best of both worlds. The one we are looking at gets 50mpg. I wish I could afford a Tesla but I can't as that gets around 300 miles between charges so we are leaning towards a Prius plug in or a Chevy Volt.
