Stressing Too Much?

Back in November 2010 I had applied for this magazine job and the editor had said he was going to give me a login account to post news stories so I waited and a month goes by and on December 26-28 I get an email from the editor saying he was dealing with a personal emergency and he would get me my login info soon. Now it's 3 months later and I've written the editor asking him what's up giving him more practice new stories and even interview suggestions and still no reply back. I even added him on Facebook and he has not written to me at all.

I was really hoping to contribute to this magazine outlet and yet this is happening to me. This same situation is also happening with this other magazine I just don't know what to do.

What should I do?

I'm so very sorry that this didn't work out, and that they took such a long time to get back to you. Please remember that this doesn't mean that you are not worthy or your pieces weren't good. It's a very competitive field, and for one position there are a number of equally good candidates.

A lot of friends who are writers are freelancers, or have a daytime job and work as a freelance writer. This might be the way that you might want to go. You would have to have a portfolio of articles that you've written, even if these haven't been published as this is what an editor would like to see. Maybe you could start a blog to purely showcase the articles that you've written, and when you submit your CV you can direct prospective employers to your blog. This will give them an idea of your writing style(s), your journalistic abilities and how you can put together all the information that you've gathered into an attractive and interesting piece. Writing is also a skill which you can hone, so do look for ways in which you can improve your skills.

Once you've got enough articles in your blog, start pitching story ideas to the editors. Depending on the type of magazine, a lot of the articles are written by contributors who don't write for them each week or month, but write based on commissions. That's why you will also need to start talking to several magazines at the same time and nurture a good rapport with magazine editors.

In the meantime, see what else you can do within the writing field. A friend of mine does corporate reports and that pays the majority of her bills. As she was a banker in a previous life, her clients are mostly in the banking/financial industry. Another friend does translations, and also does corporate communications when gigs come her way. Some do editing work, others proofread, yet others do copywriting.

Do you have a local newspaper? Maybe you can persuade them to write a regular column?

Wow-how rotten! I'd be a little stressed over it too. Do you have any other works in progress or have you just been waiting on this one?

This is the messed up part though they gave me the guidelines and rules of how to post stuff and let met submit practice pieces and said I was worthy and then throw this at me.

I managed to find their main phone number which directed me to a listing of all the works there and I got the main editor in cheif's extention number so I phoned him and told him the situation and he said to email him the situation and the conversation I had with the other web editor and he would look it all over and get back to me tomorrow if not the next day. So we'll see what happens now.
