Why should I go to college?

I am a young adult and my parents are badgering me to go to college. I don't want to. They insist I can't be successful in life without going to college. I don't want to struggle for the next 4-6 years and wind up $100K in debt trying to figure out how I am going to pay off my loans without one of the "better" jobs that no one really seems to be finding anyways these days. My plan is to get something and work my way up paying for what I need with cash so I'm not in a mountain of debt by the time I hit middle age. What is wrong with my plan?

In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with your plan. If that is what you want to do, then do it. Your parents mean well but you are the one that has to live your life. You have a very valid point about the debt and lack of jobs out there. If you are happy with where you are working, can afford your lifestyle without credit, and have potential for advancement, then I think you are doing great.

In today's push for everyone to get to college, suddenly we're finding more and more people deep in debt doing the same jobs they were doing before college and far too few people that are skilled in essential skills we as a nation need to survive. Everyone thinks college is the ticket to the easy life and suddenly they find themselves standing in very long lines to get on the ride.
