Are more liberals vegetarian?

I heard a very interesting conversation the other day where several people were discussing vegetarians. They all seemed to agree that vegetarians were more likely to be politically liberal than conservative. I'm not sure I agreed with their thinking. What do you think and why?

That's stereotyping to the nth degree if you ask me. What someone eats and how they think politically are not linked in my mind...

Three of the vegetarians in my life vote to the right. A lot of the meat and potatoes friends vote to the left.
I tend to give people my "I am NOT amused" look when they say "Ohhhhhh, best make sure you don't do the Vegan or Vegetarian thing during an election campaign or you'll vote New Democrat (Canada's furtherest to the left political party).

Not sure why they'd think that .... after all, whether you're liberal or conservative or anywhere in between, you want to be healthy, right?

Well, theoretically it's cheaper - since beans, lentils & tofu are cheaper than meat - and I guess it can be; but we tend to buy a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, which really adds up.

To be honest, I've never heard anyone say they are going vegetarian to save money.
