Invitations to dinner at non-vegetarian household

What do you do when you are invited to dinner at a non-vegetarian household? Do you ask what is being served first? Do you let the hostess know you are vegetarian?

Friends and acquaintances I have that are vegetarian simply inquire about the menu beforehand. If the meal doesn't fit their vegetarian standards then they bring something themselves.
