Chewing gum helps your memory?

I just read this interesting article about how gum chewing can help your memory. http://consumer.healthday.com/Article.asp?AID=674229 but I am not so sure I believe it. I am one of those people who literally cannot walk and chew gum at the same time. I have to spit my gum out before getting on the treadmill or I may find myself distracted enough to get thrown off. I have fallen off twice and both times I had gum in my mouth! And if I have gum in my mouth when I am trying to type, I have to stop chewing in order to concentrate. Is it just me?

In reading the article, I had a thought. It says that the people who didn't chew started faster and slowed down.. wonder if it could be the sugar in the gum, and not  just the act of chewing?

Well now there's a thought. Could there be that much sugar in gum to cause a difference?

I don't know.. I think it would depend on what brand of gum, how long they did it, etc. And I think it may be possible to get gun with caffiene. I really think that there is missing info in this study, and the info in that very short article. Also, it did say this was a 'small' study. Would be interesting to see another, larger study on this.
