I made one Black Friday purchase: a new refrigerator. We replaced a 25+ aged machine that was grinding away in our kitchen like a sweating boxer! We shopped the stores the weekend before and then waited for the Black Friday flyers. I saved an extra $100 that way.

Every year we purchase something new for our home. This year a refrigerator, last year a new entertainment center, the year before a treadmill. Next year: a new convection oven!

What we do is put $20 a week in an envelope. After 52 weeks we have $1,040.00 to work with. It allows us to pay cash and we get to refurbish our house!

I have always stayed away from Black Friday like it was the plague, HOWEVER, my DD asked me to go with her this time. Now, she and I have a rather tenuous relationship, so I jump at a chance to do something with her; it doesn' t happen often.

Anyway, I thought it would be an interesting experience, too, even if it was gross.

We left my house at 2:45 a.m. for Kohl's who opened at 3. When we got there we saw a line going around the bldg.as far as we could see. We both decided we didn't want to "do that." So we went back to my house to check the ads--we'd forgotten when Penney's opened. We finished looking at them around 3:45; DD said, "Hey that line'll be gone, now. Let's go back." So we did. No line------til we checked out. I didn't buy anything, but kept her company for the 50 minute wait.

Then we went to Penney's. No line....about a 10 minute wait for the check-out. I DID make a great buy! A wool and cashmere blend midlength coat, a $225 value for only $59! I was pretty thrilled because I haven't had a nice winter coat for many, many years. This will last a very long time.

I do not want to repeat this experience though. It ook me 2 days to catch up on sleep.

I'm with Jan on this one. I stayed away, too. But I also had 99% of my shopping done before Thanksgiving, so I do not feel any pressure at this point.

Oh, good grief, no! I stay as far away from stores on that day and the day after Christmas as I possibly can.

I did pass by quite a few strip malls on my way to my shift at the genealogy library, and every one, even the hardware store's lots, were full.
