Heat kills more than tornadoes/hurricanes
| Mon, 08-06-2012 - 8:40am |
According to this recent Health Day News article, extreme heat kills more people than any other weather related event. "Heat waves are more deadly than even the most devastating hurricane, blizzard or tornado, evidence indicates..."Vulnerability to extreme events is more complex than we know and we need to think about broader-scale adaptation," Keller concluded. "We have to recognize that heat kills far more people than the cold and that those most likely to die are people on the social margins of society." more
Do you live in an area that has been affected by the recent heat wave? Are there are deaths associated with the heat? Have you checked on an elderly neighbor or friend to see if they are okay?

We have had record heat and more than usual 90+ and 100+ days, with almost no normal rain... so I supose we can say I do live in the affected area.
And as a senior myself, I'm watching out for me! Staying in, avoiding the heat of the day. And we neighbors look out fo reach other... and our animals.
The senior center in town has been opening as cooling centers but it's a ten mile drive and not worth the effort.. Besides, so far, we've not had any power outages here (knock on wood)...
