Storm of the century?

I've been keeping a close eye on the weather this week and all I have to say is thankfully I don't live in one of the areas that are going to get it socked to them later tonight. I just saw where Chicago could get 40 inches of snow and Indianapolis a crippling ice storm.

Are any of you in the storm's path? How do you prepare for such an event?

We only got about 20", but with the blowing and drifting, some areas are bare and others have huge drifts. We can't get out the front door, but the back was sheltered, so dh was able to get out that way. He cleared away part of a 3' drift so was able to get the snowblower out. In spots, the snow is drifted higher than the blower, so has to take it in small chunks. He's done with our driveway and and is working his way down the block, as he always does, clearing the neighbors' driveways. It won't matter for a day or two, since the main roads are still closed while crews try to get them cleared and tow the cars out of the ditches. It was so bad, last night, that the driver of one of the plow equipped fire dept. pick-up trucks couldn't see where he was plowing and went into a ditch, so had to be 'rescued'. On the way back to the fire station, they picked up 20 more people. A short while ago, I heard there were only 5 left there, waiting for someone to pick them up. At times like this it really pays off, having an AWD vehicle!

I have a container of homemade chicken soup thawing and will heat it for him, when he comes back in. That'll warm him from the inside, out. The pictures on TV and the news websites are really something.

I'm glad you only had to contend with rain, but there's something about being snowed in, knowing that you can't go anywhere. At times like that, all we can do is sit back, relax and enjoy the peace and quiet! Soon the plows will be making a lot of noise.
