Storm of the century?

I've been keeping a close eye on the weather this week and all I have to say is thankfully I don't live in one of the areas that are going to get it socked to them later tonight. I just saw where Chicago could get 40 inches of snow and Indianapolis a crippling ice storm.

Are any of you in the storm's path? How do you prepare for such an event?

I spoke too soon. I just got an email that my county may be in for ice. We thought we were enough south but maybe not. I'll go out after work and pick up a few emergency things (like pizza, chips, cookies...) just in case. ;)

hahaha-we already have emergency essentials like candles, batteries, Kerosene, etc.

Hey Cheryl, has it started there yet? How much snow do you have on the ground now?

LOL! I can't say I hope it passes you by because if it does that means it will hit my area. ;)

Sounds like you're all prepared so stay warm and don't have too much fun.

Bring it on! Let it snow! I'm ready for it. Living in the Chicago area all my life, I know to prepare for whatever Mother Nature throws at us. In fall, I make sure I'm stocked up on staples, then just replace what I use over the next few months. The freezer is stocked with containers of soup and other easy to heat up things that were left over. Other than fresh fruits and veggies, I'm ready, just made a quick stop at the store yesterday and don't have to go out for anything for a few days. I even planned ahead and had dh get to the gas station yesterday morning, before the crowds. He filled the car, as well as the spare gas containers for the yard tractor mounted snow blower and the generator.

Chicago and the 'burbs are well prepared for this. The city has 50 snowmobiles spread around at various fire and police stations, so the first responders can get where they're needed should someone call them. The plows are already out on the roads, getting ahead of the snow. They're only predicting 12 to 20 inches, but some areas could get more. Some of the earlier computer models showed a lot more snow while others showed less, so we'll see. Some of the buildings downtown are planning on closing and hotels are offering bargain "blizzard" rates. Many schools are closing early, today, and not opening tomorrow. Things should be ok by Thursday. It's really not too bad if you prepare and plan ahead.

20 inches of snow would shut down my entire town for days. Several years ago we got 22 inches and businesses couldn't open for 3 days. It was another 2-3 days before most people even got out of their driveways and most of us were stuck in for a good week. Thankfully it was over the Christmas holiday so schools weren't open anyways.

Thankfully the freezing rain turned to all cold heavy plain rain by night's end. It's not freezing cold and the wind is blowing really hard but so far we don't have anything too serious to deal with.
