Retirement?

I am getting a late start on planning my retirement and I just have a question for you all. Did you plan for your retirement and if so, has it been enough? If you could go back, what kind of changes would you make to ensure that you had enough now? Thank you for your advice.

Hi Mary,

I sort of planned my retirement. I started on Social Security at the proper time and I wanted to continue to work for a while longer because I was making under the threshold (It is hard when you reach the SS retirement age in the middle of the year and you are still working.) because it would be like having two salaries coming in. I only made 6 months of this when I had to have emergency open heart surgery and this forced me to retire. I tried to go back to work but I just couldn't do it. Now I feel well enough that I could go back to work but I say, "Why bother!".

My experience is two fold: It takes about a year to get used to the reduced income and to figure out exactly what you want to buy, etc. I do think that you need to develop a budget for yourself and you need to see if you can live by this budget. Do plan some fun in there if you can.

And secondly I suggest that you seriously think about the things that you have always wanted to do but haven't had time for. Make a list, some would call this a bucket list, and start doing those things.  Maybe I feel this way because of being brought up short by the need to have the heart surgery but I hate to see people want to do something and then never get to do it. I have done several of things on my list and I am working down it! I have completed somethings and I need to think if there is anything else that I want to put on it and haven't.

What is your situation like? Were these comments helpful?

ha. I want to answer a few posts while I can still get on Ivillage..

Anyway; I am 59 years old and female and been divorced and actually did not plan for retirement but my ex H and I when we were divorced I got a divorce settlement a few years ago and some of his pension.. When I reach 62 I will get ex's social security and more pension so I will be okay..I have also for the last few years lived with family which I didnt like very much but it did save me huge amounts of money not paying high rents. I do pay my sis but not near the money I would be paying out in real world.. Lost my job and some other income due to crash of 2008 but I am hanging in there the best that I can... Right now I am looking to move to an apt. that I can afford.. Also always looking for part time work but for now I am okay..

I am a person who subscribes to one day at a time and whatever will be will be.. I will always be okay because I am a survivor.. Now if my ex dies due to his pension and the state I will inherit a ton of money due to state laws and then I will be very very okay... (lol)

Only thing I dont have medical insurance but the clinic I go to says I can get state insurance in NY so I am thinking about that.. I live as frugal as I can but I do free things and low cost things and keep my life in a strict budget... I also have some nice friends who at times feed me and pay for my lunch and things and drive me somewhere..

So far the Universe has provided..

take care

Hi! I don't have any advice for you (the others gave you pretty much what I would have), but I do want to welcome you to the board. I hope you'll visit often now that you've found us.

Are you having problems getting on iVillage or is it a different reason altogether? I'd like to help, if I can.

I wanted to take a Bible study class since I had never had time for that and I have done that! I wanted to take some on-line needlework classes and I am presently doing that. I am almost addicted to needlework but I needed to find a way to do it less expensively and I didn't know if I would like on-line learning. I think the answer to this is perhaps! Somethings I haven't enjoyed and I have given them away. To a certain extent I miss the live interaction with other stitchers. I also have been travelling and my husband has now retired too. I also wanted to get my health back under control and I am doing that as it is an on-going project! It took me two years to get over my heart surgery and feel totally healed up again. This did surprise me!

So I think this is still a work in progress!!

What is the situation with your internet access? Is it something we can help you with around here?
