:heart:Hi All,

It has been a little while since I've posted on this board.  My anxiety has become so bad that it has basically consumed my life.  It seems like it is specifically caused by work and the terrible work environment that I come to every day.  I can't concentrate and I can't seem to find anything to calm myself down.  I am currently participating in an intensive outpatient therapy program - which is three nights a week, for three hours each night, and combines group talk therapy with education and coping skills.  We also see a psychiatrist once a week - he currently has me on Effexor (150 mg) and Tranxene.  Nothing seems to calm the anxiety though... It is becoming so hard to function and I'm scared of ultimately losing my job.

Any kind words would help or some advice on some coping skills or medications that have worked for you.  My aunt is my main support (or as group would say "life line") and she is out of town right now... I miss her so much and am really having trouble coping.

Thank you in advance for your help and I hope that everyone is doing well

Hi there!

I'm sorry things are so rough for you. :smileysad:

I know when I get worked up there really isn't any way to get me calm—it just needs to pass.

I know you said your aunt is out of town. How about putting yourself in her shoes and 'pretend' to give yourself some calming advice? What would she tell you to do? Would she recommend doing something specific?

Have you done any journaling? I know when things really start reeling for me, if I write some of them down I can gain some perspective and it starts to take away the real can't-catch-my-breath feeling.

hey :smileyhappy: what works for me is coming up with a back-up plan, i.e. what i will do if [whatever i'm afraid of] happens. it's a "safety net" for me. so you're afraid of losing your job; what will you DO if that happens? ("do" is the key word here - when you are anxious, you need to take action.) look for another job, right? polish up your resume and send it to other employers. maybe do some networking. why don't you start doing those things now? make sure your resume is up-to-date, and find out what other companies in your profession might be hiring. get to know a couple of people at those companies, if at all possible so that you'll have some contacts. honestly, you will feel so much better if you face your fear with an action plan. we all lose our jobs at some point in our lives; it's reality and you just have to deal with it.

hope this helps, and that you're feeling slightly less anxious today :smileyhappy:

I recently read this book and it gave me a lot of hope. Maybe it will do the same with you.
