Ativan vs Xanax???

My internist already has me on Ativan for anxiety, so she is aware I'm dealing with tons of stress and she also knows I have developed gastritis as a result of the stress.  Today I left a message requesting a trial of Xanax instead of Ativan, since in my research - incl. talking to a couple of pharmacists - I've learned many people find Xanax MUCH less sedating while still relieving anxiety, not to mention apparently some find it may even help with muscle tension.  I need something for anxiety and the sedation helps me sleep, but it's an issue when I know I'll be driving - so many times I have to just go without Ativan until I'm safely back home.  My sister's regular doctor prescribed Xanax for her years ago without much fanfare, knowing she also was dealing with tons of stress, and she continues to take it daily years later at a low dose, still without fanfare from the same doctor.  My own doctor turned me down today when I requested a month long trial of Xanax to find out if I would find it less sedating, both pharmacists today told me I won't know unless I try taking it.  Needless to say tonight I'm steamed knowing I'm gonna have to see a shrink now to even try a month of Xanax.  I think it's just ridiculous, it's the same category of drugs and appears to be a milder drug than the Ativan she already gives me, so I'm baffled - the doctor said since it's in the same category there's really no point in switching, I disagree.  Anyone else here try both drugs and what was your experience?

Neither work for me. I get zero results. I could pop all at once and nothing. My sister's took xanax at various times and it knocks them flat on their backs. My one sister took one pill (.25mg) when we went on our plane trip. She was out cold the entire 3hr flight.

I find them to be equal.

However, I'd be just as ticked as you about the doctor saying no. I know the hoops I have to jump through with psychologists for simple meds like this. I know you said internist. What about going to your regular MD? That's what I ended up doing, even for my zoloft (which I'm now off of). He gave me a handful of xanax to take as needed.

You're lucky that she did that. Most doctors require you to come in for a new script like that. I bet if you went in she would have offered (or you could have asked) about samples.

I don't recall getting samples from my doctor on those though. When I was on Pristique and switched to my MD for them I got a boatload of samples (which was lucky because I had an issue with my mail order and the psych wouldn't fax them a new script—he apparently didn't care if I'd be without them, can you imagine that? Coming off a pill like that cold turkey?).

How are you doing with the xanax?
