How and why does anxiety make you so tired?

I have been having family problems resulting in a lot of anxiety and I feel exhausted. Could anxiety make me feel so tired and heavy? How???

Absolutely. It mentally wears you down. I feel it when I've had a particularly yucky day.

Hi, we release stress hormones when we are stressed out or full of anxiety.  Chemicals like cortisol and norepinephrine and this wears us out.  Your body is working really hard to first release these chemicals then to get rid of these chemicals.  You are using your muscles when this is all happening.  It is the same as doing a workout session at the gym.  The only real difference is that when you work out the chemicals that are released are then controlled by endorphins.  Those make you feel great.  This is why depressed people are told to exercise, because then we can get those endorphins flowing and feel better.  Same goes for those of us who are anxious, if we exercise we get to those endorphins, and tadah!  feeling better.  It is a natural way of using our bodies to heal our bodies.  It is believed that antistress hormones are released during meditation and yoga, hormones that basically cut off the production of the stress hormones.  They are still studying that but it sounds good to me.
