Holding down a job with Bipolar Disorder
Sun, 03-17-2013 - 3:58pm

I am struggling with my new diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder and am trying to accept it. Everyone keeps telling me not to Google it but I have and I have noticed that so many people with Bipolar Disorder can't hold down a job. I've been working at mine for years and wondered if that meant I may not have Bipolar Disorder after all. Has anyone else here held down the same job for years?

I have a family member with Bipolar Disorder who started his own business 25 years ago and has been very successful with it. There have been many times when his behavior nearly ruined things but he has an unbelievably supportive wife and family who stuck by him helped when times got really rough.

I think it is great that you are able to hold down your job and wish you continued success.

There are of course various degrees of having bipoarl--remember tha Jane Pauley was diagnosed with it and she had a very high profile job.  My exH has bipolar and always worked.  he was a widower with a child & didn't really have much choice.  then when we were married, he got injured & had to change jobs but he had a full time job for the past 10 yrs.  I think in his case, a job actually helped him have some structure.  when he was out sick (for almost 2 yrs) he really didn't enjoy it.
