Anyone taking Cymbalta?

Hi guys,

I'm currently taking Wellbutrin but I have back surgery in May and I'm having horrible. Horrible nerve pain so I'm also taking Nurotin. The nerve pain is getting better but I'm not sleeping at night because the pain is so bad when I try to relax. So my doctor suggested that I may want to try taking Cymbalta in place of the Wellbutrin & Nurotin.

I would like to know if anyone else is taking Cymbalta and has it helped with the depression? I have tried Zoloft but I gained weight like crazy and my sex drive non existent. I hate that I keep having to try new medications but with all this nerve pain it makes it very difficulty to play with my kids, get to the gym and I'm really getting down in the dumps. I'm to the point where I don't even want to leave the house because I just don't want to do anything. It's really get bad. They told me it would be 6-8 months, possibly more before I'm feeling 100% and that is just for the nerve pain. So the longer it goes on, the more depressed I get. = (

I hope someone has some ideas, suggestions or comments on the Cymbalta or any other medications you have tried.

I never had any luck with ANY antidepressants at all, only nasty side effects. My primary doctor swears only 50% of people are helped by antidepressants, my therapist says the number is more like 80%, so ??? All I know is I tried most of the tricyclics many years ago and got nothing but sweating, no help for depression, although I slept like a log on one of them. Zoloft and Prozac messed with my already sensitive stomach, so after a year testing those two one after another I gave up, side effects never went away although I was assured over and over they would. Last summer I caved in and tried Cymbalta, two days of it and my stomach was in turmoil and I swore to myself if that happened, no more, so I stopped it that quickly. Then I was put on a mood stabilizer and made it a whole 5 days before IT hit my stomach. A psychiatrist is the one who usually prescribes these drugs, since that's their area of expertise - they usually don't actually do therapy anymore, they leave that to the therapists on staff and they deal with drugs, period. One psychiatrist talked only about drugs, the second wanted a rundown on my entire history and HIM I could have worked with, he seemed genuinely interested in ME, not just in drugs, and he nailed a couple of issues in one appointment that lasted about an hour. He did not recommend antidepressants for me at all, since I have had a long, miserable history of trying them. He DID tell me that for some Neurontin taken around the clock in a large enough dose can combat depression, it's used off label in that way, and it should also help your nerve pain, as well. It has to be in your system 24/7 to work as an antidepressant, though, so you tend to feel woozy most of the time, he said your body adjusts over time. When you don't get relief for pain or for depression, it leads to more depression. I also take 5HTP around the clock, my therapist "suggested" I might want to give it a whirl even though she can't legally prescribe it, you can get it online, I buy the Swanson brand, comes in two doses. It helps some with depression, it helps me to some extent, but I'm in such a bad place at the moment nothing is working any miracles. Good luck whatever you try.
