Were you depressed as a child? Did you ever tell anyone and did they take you seriously? Depression was just becomming something people were diagnosed with when I was younger and I remember telling my mother once I was depressed and she told me I wasn't old enough to have anything to be depressed about. I am just curious as to other people's experience.

That is a great question!!!! Smile

To answer, no, I was not depressed as a child.  My depression came out (or I noticed it, I sapose) after my mother died in 1997.

I am not trying to ask how old you are (smile), so I am not sure how to ask what decade did "depression" come out more or be talked about more.

I should know the answer to this because I have a degree in Psychology, but my degree is becoming out dated and I am becoming old (grin).

Curious to see everyone's imput on this!!

Phyllis, I have to wonder if we are about the same age. I don't remember dealing with depression as a child but my husband did. He never got help for it until he was an adult. I know that when I was growing up there was only one person that I know that had ever been labeled as "depressed" and he was a friend's father. The man had a drinking problem and spent time in and out of a mental hospital. No one really ever talked about depression but instead labeled him as crazy or lazy.

I'm not really sure when depression came to be recognized and treated more openly but I am very glad that people can talk about it now.

This is a really good question...I know that I was depressed long before my diagnosis.

It seems like I might have been as a child to.

Does anyone hear of "Situational" Depression?

Just wondering...

ltlfredom,

I am fifty-four and my childhood looking back was also bad...:(...

Like you the meds have helped.

I am on a new one but not too sure about it yet.

My old one worked but then it just quit working.

Lately I believe since losing so many ppl some recently it is Grief that has affected me.

I was depressed as a child.  My mum wrote it off as difficulty adjusting, because I had just switched schools; the only person who believed me was the school counsellor.  I wasn't really taken seriously until my third suicide attempt at 17, and even then my mum still told me to get over it.

Thanks, Lorie.  I like to think that I've come to grips with it.  It was tough at the time, but we all go through rough patches.  I've learned what I can and can't tell my mum now and I don't get nearly as much invalidation now that I censor myself.
