Could Exercise Ease Depression?

According to iVillage Health, exercise could be an alternative to antidepressants. "Therapists have been saying it for years: Getting some exercise can relieve the symptoms of depression, such as persistent feelings of sadness, irritability, loss of interest in doing things you usually enjoy and insomnia or excessive sleeping. Past studies have confirmed that over time, regular exercise can be nearly as effective as antidepressants, prompting the American Psychiatric Association to prescribe regular workouts as a viable treatment for depression." read more

I'm sure it could be as effective as antidepressants for some types of depression, but not for all.  It is helpful, though.  Exercise is a big part of my treatment plan and I definitely feel the difference between the days I exercise and the days I don't.  I'm supposed to exercise every day but don't always (lately, don't often) and I have bad days more frequently when I don't exercise at least an hour a day, four days a week.  That includes swimming, walking the dog, riding the bike downstairs, and yoga.  Swimming is the best because it's the activity I like the most and it's a darn good workout.  :)

yes it does help, plus it helps with anxiety problems also, i know cause when i was going through a hard time i started to walk 5 miles a day and felt so much better doing it... that was 25 years ago, i can't do that type of walking anymore with my bad hips, but i'm also not as depress as i was 25 years ago..

I exercise as much as possible trying to cope/deal with the RA and OA...
Seeing a physiotherapist in Aug. :)
I used to walk 5km. plus a day now I sometimes can barely walk across the hall to my bathroom...:(...
I hung some clothes out on the clothes-line, a very small load. I had to sit down after but I felt so good just doing it.
For the first time in about ten years I have a yard and I love it, so I am outdoors...
Everyday I try to walk...
I do take medication though for Depression.
It does help.

I agree that it can ... but I've had it backfire.

Started exercising...nothing rigorous ... then got a nagging injury ... put me in a total tailspin.
