Does anyone know of a depression support group similar to AA or NA?

Dear Mallory, have you gotten an official diagnosis? I don't believe in labels myself but I am just curious. Frequent periods of depression sounds like me but the closest I've gotten with my therepist was that I have a personality disorder (moderate OCD and mild schizotypal) with MDD. I guess either way, it's a guessing game.

Yes, I've been "diagnosed" with chronic depression, social anxiety disorder ... for 25+ years. I've been through it all. Last year, a psychiatrist thought I had bipolar endencies, but never officially pinned the label on me. Believe me, I don't like them either ... as I've said before here, they do not define me, but are a BIG part of my life ...

I want to add that you're "lucky" that the psychiatrist hesitated in "pinning" the bipolar label on you. From what I know, they're very quick these days to go with bipolar in many cases that are in the depression category, it's like a label de jour or something. Someone told me once that bipolar only guarantees that the insurance company is going to less likely deny the claim so the length of treatment is longer. I'm very cynical about these things because from my experience psychiatry is really a big business. I found that I've made more progress with licensed psychologists and professionals who truly will have the time to get to know you and your "issues". Have you given therapy a try yet?

First I want to say hello and thank you to Heidi and Promise ... I will definitely check out the national support group.

One more thought, does your state offer Medicaid or any kind of state assistance? If you don't have income, you should qualify for state medical assistance. It's worth looking into it.

I've looked into aid and I do not qualify according to the eligibility requirements in my state (I am not pregnant, do not have dependents, and am not on disability). That's the brick wall I've run into. Doesn't seem right, but nothing I can do. The only way I can be defined as disabled is with the help of a psychiatrist, which I cannot see. Don't get me started! But thank you for the suggestion.
