Could my 14 year old have an eating disorder

I am beginning to suspect my 14 year old daughter may have an eating disorder. Is she too young for me to be worried about it? She is awfully thin and seems to be getting thinner to me. She has a sudden interest in working out and she barely eats when we have dinner. I've tried to talk to her about her body and self-image and she blows me off. Is this normal?

Hey,

welcome to the board. I'm sorry to answer you so late. I had log-in problems.

Yes, even children that are as young as six have developed an ED. It looks like you are picking it up early so please make an appointment with her PCP as soon as possible. With luck you may prevent things getting worse. Talking therapies are also helpful and this is another course of action.

Please let us know how you and your daughter get on.

Promise is right.  I know 14 may seem very young, but eating disorders can develop very early.  In fact, my eating disorder started when I was 14.

Hello :)

I don't have anything to offer. I agree with the other responses. It definitely is not too young. However, as stated, it is very good that you see the signs now as opposed to later. The earlier she can get help the better.

Will be thinking of you and hope you come back to update on how everything is going!

much love
