Neice has Bulimia and is pregnant

My neice is pregnant and my sister and I are very concerned. She has Bulimia and she has been gorging like crazy. She is only 13 weeks and has already gained 30 lbs. We begged her to make sure her OB/GYN knows about her eating disorder but she doesn't want to say anything. My sister wonders if she should intervene and let the doc know. Your thoughts?

Brenda, if your niece is an adult then it is her business whether or not to tell the doctor about her eating disorder. The niece's doctor will monitor  weight during her pregnancy so please rest assured she will talk to your niece about her weight if she feels anything might need extra attention.

How is your niece doing?

I'm not really sure if you could intervene if she is an adult. However, if she's gained that much weight and the ED is out of control, I would try to mention it to her doctor. If the baby and her are in danger that should be reason enough. Does she get counseling or see a doctor for her ED? If so, maybe talk to them about it?

If she's already gained that much weight, I would imagine her doc will want to address that. I have had similar experiences where when I was really sick people intervened and told my doc. Yes, I was an adult too so I think you can intervene if a person is in danger.

Please let us know how everything is going!

Take care!
